Impact Test Experiment

Procedure

  1. Measure the dimensions of the specimen, including the dimensions of the notch.
  2. Raise the hammer and note the initial reading on the dial, which represents the initial energy of the pendulum before fracturing the specimen.
  3. Place the specimen in the testing machine and ensure that it is centered with respect to the hammer. Check the position of the notch.
  4. Release the hammer and note the final dial reading. The difference between the initial and final readings gives the energy required to fracture the specimen.
  5. Calculate the energy of rupture of the specimen.

Virtual Procedure

  1. Start the experiment by clicking the Play button.
  2. Observe the impact of the moving hammer on the test specimen.
  3. Observe the specimen breaking into two pieces and the corresponding loss of energy.
  4. Observe the observation table showing the results of different trials. The mean energy required for fracture of the specimen is calculated.
  5. Use the Pause, Play, and Restart controls to view the simulation at different stages.
