Impact Test Experiment

After performing this experiment, the learner will be able to:

  1. Understand the principle and significance of impact testing of engineering materials.
  2. Study the behaviour of materials subjected to sudden impact loading.
  3. Understand the purpose of providing a notch in the test specimen.
  4. Measure the energy absorbed by the specimen during fracture.
  5. Determine the impact toughness (impact strength) of the material using the Izod impact test.
  6. Differentiate between ductile and brittle fracture based on the energy absorbed during impact.
  7. Relate the impact properties of materials to their applications in engineering structures and machine components subjected to dynamic loading.
