Representation of components of Optical microscope and working principle using Virtual Reality

Note: This is a VR experiment, so idea is to play with the variables. Suggested steps, to utilize the simulation and learn from the changes, are:

  1. Click on the part of microscope and check whether you could correctly identify the same. This exercise will help you understand and identify various parts of the microscope, understand its location and function.
  2. Try to locate the light source and observe the path of its travel in the microscope to create an image. Light is very important in forming the image with good brightness and to capture features of the specimen.
  3. Play with ‘coarse-focus knob’ and ‘fine-focus knob’ to check and bring the image in focus. Focus is very important in forming the image and observing its features.
  4. Vary the objective lens magnification using the turret, and also check the role of eye-piece in enhancing the overall magnification. Maginfication allows noticing certain details which might get missed at lower magnification. In addition, low magnification images also provide an insight into overall spread/distribution of features in the microstructure.
  5. Check how diopter changes the focus of image (or corrects in case when one is wearing/not wearing powered glasses) to correct vision.
  6. Play with diaphragm. To observe the control aperture, and consequent effect on the brightness and field of view.
  7. Capture the image using camera feature. Using the camera, one can keep a record of various features either at different magnifications and/or different locations and among various samples for comparison.
