Understanding of microscope and its types using VR
Note: This is a VR experiment, so idea is to play with the variables. Suggested steps, to utilize the
simulation and learn from the changes, are:
- Click on the type of microscope to observe its features. Do spend time and observe the
overall nature of various types of microscopes. This will assist identification and
understanding of the features of microscopes used for certain samples.
- Utilize ‘coarse-focus knob’ to check and bring the object in focus. If the images do not focus,
then it becomes difficult to obtain good resolution and identification of features.
- Utilize ‘fine-focus knob’ to perform slow changes in bringing the sample features to focus.
Focus is very important in forming the image and observing its features clearly. And fine
focus become important, especially at higher magnifications (say 500× and/or 1000×) where
features must be distinguished to obtained better perception and record of imaged region.
- Play with the intensity of light on observing the changes in the image features/contrast. Very
high intensity of light may also saturate the image, and very low light intensity will darken
the entire image. Thus, an optimal construct and choice is required for acquiring a good
quality image with high contrast.
- Select the object and vary the position of the lens to observe the change in the feature focus
at image plane. The play of focal length of the lens permits accommodation of sample
height. An objective lens with higher focal length will warrant keeping the sample far,
whereas a short focal length can image the sample from near and still bring the sample in
focus (and accommodating larger sized samples).
- Vary the magnification using the objective-turret and observe the changes in the feature details/ magnification. Magnifications permit observing features that might get missed when observing at lower magnification.
