This process involves several key concepts and parameters, including the null hypothesis (H0), the alternative hypothesis (Ha), and the significance level (α).
Key Concepts and Parameters
Null Hypothesis (H0): This hypothesis represents a statement of no effect, no difference, or no relationship in the population. It serves as the default or baseline hypothesis that researchers aim to test against. For example, H0 might state that there is no difference in mean blood pressure between two different treatment groups.
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha): This hypothesis contradicts the null hypothesis and represents a statement of an effect, a difference, or a relationship in the population. It is what researchers seek to provide evidence for. For example, Ha might state that there is a difference in mean blood pressure between two different treatment groups.
Significance Level (α): This is the threshold probability for rejecting the null hypothesis. It represents the probability of committing a Type I error, which occurs when the null hypothesis is true but is incorrectly rejected. Common values for α are 0.05, 0.01, and 0.10.
P-value: The p-value is the probability of obtaining sample data at least as extreme as the observed data, assuming that the null hypothesis is true. A smaller p-value indicates stronger evidence against the null hypothesis. If the p-value is less than the significance level (α), the null hypothesis is rejected.
Type I and Type II Errors:
- Type I Error (α): This error occurs when the null hypothesis is wrongly rejected when it is actually true.
- Type II Error (β): This error occurs when the null hypothesis is not rejected when it should be, meaning that the alternative hypothesis is true but we fail to detect it.
Test Statistic: A test statistic is a numerical value calculated from sample data, which is used to determine the p-value and make decisions about the null hypothesis. Different tests have different test statistics, such as the Z-score, t-statistic, or chi-squared statistic.
