George Miller Experiment
Procedure
Step 1: Input the Number of Words
- At the start of each trial, you will be asked to decide how many words you want to memorize and give the number in input box.
- Enter a number, such as 3, 4, or 5, based on how many words you feel comfortable attempting.
Step 2: Display of Words
- The program will display the selected number of random words side-by-side on the screen.
- The words will remain visible for a short duration (e.g., 5 seconds) and then disappear automatically.
- Focus on memorizing both the words and their order during this time.
Step 3: Entering the Words
- After the words disappear, you will see a series of input boxes on the screen.
- Enter the words you remember in the exact order they were displayed.
Step 4: Submit Your Response
- Once you have entered the words, click the “Submit” button to finalize your response.
- Double-check your entries to ensure they are in the correct order before submitting.
Step 5: Receive Feedback
- After submitting, you will receive immediate feedback on your performance.
- Feedback will include:
- The number of words you recalled correctly.
Step 6: Repeat the Trial
- Repeat the process multiple times with the same word span (e.g., 3 words) to ensure reliable results.
Step 7: Increase Word Span
- When ready, increase the number of words for the next trial to make the task more challenging.
- If you have selected 3 before, by selecting 4 the program will now display 4 words instead of 3.
Step 8: Data Collection
- For each trial, the following data will be recorded:
- Number of words attempted.
- Number of words recalled correctly.
- Accuracy of the sequence.
- This data helps measure your short-term memory performance as the word span increases.
Notes
- Start with a smaller word span (e.g., 3 words) to get familiar with the task.
- Gradually increase the word span as you progress for a greater challenge.
- Pay close attention to the order of the words, as accuracy matters.
